When a cancer that has originated in one organ / place spreads to another organ / place in the body, the cancer in the new organ / place is known as metastatic cancer and the process of spreading of cancer is known as metastasizing. But, the cancer in the new place is also known by the name of the original cancer. For example, when breast cancer spreads to lungs the cancer formed in the lungs is not known or treated as lung cancer but it is considered as metastasized breast cancer or simply as breast cancer. When examined under a microscope the cells in the metastasized cancer in the lungs look like the same cells as in the cancer of the afflicted breast. Metastatic cancer is a complicated condition and has poor prognostic status.
All type of cancers including leukaemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, etc. can metastasize to different organs, lymph nodes and other locations. All types of cancer can spread to the nearby tissues and organs.
The common sites where the cancer metastases are bone, liver and lung. The order indicates the increase of occurrence. Although most cancers are capable of spreading to different organs in the body the most common organs of occurrence of metastatic cancer for some type of cancers are detailed below:

How Cancer Spreads
The following methods and stages are involved in metastasizing of cancer
- Local invasion: Spreading of cancer to nearby healthy normal tissues is known as local invasion
- Intravasation: When cancer cells invade the walls and move through walls of nearby lymph vessels and blood vessels, it is known as intravasation.
- Circulation: Cancer cells entering blood stream and lymphatic system and is spread to different parts of the body.
- Extravasation: The spreading of cancer cells stops moving in small blood vessels known as capillaries. They start invading the walls of the capillaries and migrate into the nearby tissues. This migration is known as extravasation.
- Proliferation: Cancer cells migrated to distant location start multiplying in the new location and small tumors are formed there.
- Angiogenesis: The newly formed tumors of metastasized cancer stimulate the growth of new blood vessels so that they get oxygen and nutrients for their growth.
Symptoms of Metastatic Tumor/Cancer
The symptoms of metastatic cancer relates to the size and location of such cancers. For example, the symptoms of cancer that has spread to bone may show symptoms like pain and may lead to bone fracture. Cancer that has spread to brain may show various symptoms like seizures, headaches etc. Shortness of breath can be a symptom of metastasized lung cancer.
In some cases, the original cancer is diagnosed only after the metastasized cancer is diagnosed based on its symptoms.
